How to check if a TV aerial is working

Posted on 12.04.2016

Your TV is one of the most used devices in your home and there are many people who keep their TV turned on virtually all the time, even when they are doing something else. So, when something goes wrong, the lack of that TV sound and vision is really noticeable!

One of the most common problems is when the TV doesn't show any signal on the screen. When something like this happens, the TV usually can't setup the TV channels automatically. This makes the TV owner wonder whether their TV aerial is working properly and if they should they check or test it. What most people want to know is whether they can get this job done without climbing on the roof because, as we all know, this task can be very difficult and very dangerous in some cases. The good news is that there are other ways to check if a TV aerial is working other than clambering over the roof!

One of the simplest methods to determine a possible problem is to plug the cable to another TV. If you have an additional TV in another room, connect the device to the aerial point that you want to check and start scanning for TV channels. Clearly if the TV locates the channels then something is wrong with the other TV rather than it being an aerial problem. This may seem an obvious check but it's amazing how many people call out aerial companies without doing this test only to find that the problem was with the TV!

There is also another efficient way to test the TV aerial. All you need to do is to take the TV and connect it to a socket that works properly and try it. If the TV is able to get a signal when it is plugged to another socket, then there is nothing wrong with the TV.

Finally, you can also use a specially designed aerial tester to check the TV signal. Every TV aerial installer has one and they can conduct an aerial and signal test without any hassle. In addition, you can purchase your own home aerial tester. These testers don't cost much, they're easy to use and the indicator will show the signal strength quickly.
